Cherry blossoms were beautiful especially this year.
Very few people, however, have chance to enjoy.
This unfortunate life is because of the rule “stay home” which Nobuko and I observe faithfully every day.
I keep myself quite busy, through telework for preparing next patent applications.
It is clear now that all countries around the world underestimated power of the corona virus. Japan as well as USA are no exception.
Regarding Japan’s current situation several factors seem responsible for the crisis.
One is 2020 Tokyo Olympics. The governments, both national and Tokyo, intentionally kept dwarfing the truth of what were happening, as was exemplified by the cruse ship Diamond Princes. In fact, the international critics blames that for this reason Japan government did not increase PCR kits. And therefore, the relevant statistical data from Japan are said to be unreliable.
Unlike USA and many Europ states, the city lockdown is not enforced one. but “request” This “soft” approach causes a number of problems. For example, it is difficult for restaurant owners to decide whether close or open. The 2 meter social distancing is basically observed these days, but some downtown areas are crowded mostly by young generations looking for fun. Also, subways and commuter trains are as heavily crowded as before.
Before and during the Pacific war, human right and freedom did not exist in Japan.
Since the end of the war until today, Japan and its people ,have been over sensitive
to any postwar counter movement. In my opinion, this underlies the reason why Japan had to choose
the soft approach, rather than enforced one.
About a month ago, I made a short trip with Nobuko to LA area, mainly for
my present business, eg. Caltech, Convention centers.
At that time there was no sign at all of the coming corona virus crisis.

I understand that the corona virus is relatively under control in North California such as San Francisco and your town Sacramento. I hear that this difference from LA is ascribed to the fact the lockdown began only several days earlier than LA.
The lack of such speed was evident regarding a number of decision makings in Japan.
Finally, your recent research on spike coding is interesting. Before my comment I need to read the content of URLs. Because I left the field long time ago, please let me have some time to reset me

今年の桜は特に美しく咲いています。
しかし、それを楽しむ人は殆どいません。
この不幸なめぐり合わせは 「お家にいましょう」のルールのためです。

例外でありません。
日本の現在の状況ですが、危機を招いた要素がいくつかありそうです。
まず一つは２０２０東京五輪です。 政府は、国も東京都も,起きている事実を意図的に矮小化して報道してきました。 クルーズ船ダイアモンドプリンセスの件が代表例です。
実際、海外からの批判は、PCR検査を増やし陽性が多いと五輪開催に悪影響を与えるので、日本が公表する関係データは信頼できない、というものです。
日本流の「都市封鎖」はアメリカやヨーロッパの国々の強制と違い、「要請」です。
このソフトなアプローチは、それはそれで、様々な問題を起こします。
たとえば、レストランのオーナーにとっては「開店」か「閉店」かで悩みます。
床屋や美容院も同様です。
２ｍのソシアルディスタンスですが，最近は概ね守られているようです。
しかし、盛り場によっては娯楽を求める若い人達で混雑しています。
また、平日の地下鉄や通勤電車は以前と変わらず非常に混雑しています。
太平洋戦争の戦前、戦中の時代、人権や自由は日本に存在しなかった。 ・
終戦から今日まで、日本と日本国民は戦争の反省とトラウマから、いかなる
反動勢力に対しても過剰に抵抗するようになった。 これが国民心理の根底にあり、
それが強権対応でなく今回のようなソフトな方法を選ばざるを得なかったと僕は考えています。
